Guys, if your girlfriend hasn't already marked February 14th on your calendar, encapsulated in tiny scribbled hearts, just a head's up: It's probably a good time to start brainstorming ideas for the big occasion (don't laugh... this tops her holiday-hopefuls list!). For those of you willing to go above and beyond, and step outside the box of roses, chocolates and Teddy bears, here are a few gift tips that are sure you to earn you more than a few extra brownie points.

If you are pinched for cash:
Love "coupons" and love letters generally do the trick.
Anything that reveals your emotions seals the deal, and what is more
personal than your own feelings? Too much? Scale it back a bit and
present her with coupons that you've made up.
Good for one movie night, dinner date, etc.
These gifts are cheap, if not free, and the most intimate you can get.

Don't worry, I won't tell your friends.
If you guys are super sex-driven:
I'd hate to suggest a Valentine's gag gift, but a sex-inspired gift package
can be fun and different. I won't get into all the specifics you can fill her
goodie bag with (ha ha ha), but I'm sure you can find inspirational resources
if you have a hard time figuring it out. Alright, enough with the innuendos.

If she's into music:
Sometimes, it's all about going the extra mile. Sure, compiling a CD of
her favorites are a sweet gesture, but it doesn't particularly say Valentine's Day,
does it? Remember: This is her day, and she wants it to be special. If you can
afford it, setting a concert or opera date, or even a plan for a dubstep festival
(depending on her taste), is thoughtful and different. A musical affair just
not feasible right now? Dinner accompanied by your homemade CD to set the
mood is romantic, and shows her you put thought into her interests.

If she's overly romantic:
Give her what this girl wants most: your time. The romantic
really just loves being around you. Amp it up with a candlelit dinner
and game night. Anything that involves the two of you
participating in an activity together on a love-symbolic holiday will do the trick.
If a piece of jewelry is in your budget, that doesn't hurt either. Just sayyyyyyin.'

If all of these ideas sound way too "gay" for your taste:
Haha, did I make you LOL? Well if you're laughing along agreeably,
then you really aren't into putting any effort into making Valentine's Day
a memorable one for your girlfriend. Remember guys, Valentine's Day
is her day, and it should be all about making her feel appreciated
and loved as your girlfriend.

Even though I'm a girl, I have to disagree with you saying Valentine's Day is "her" day. I think Valentine's Day is not a day made just for girlfriends ...or even just for boyfriends, but should be more focused on celebrating a relationship and how much (or what) that relationship means to you. And for me, celebrating that doesn't require chocolate, flowers or any other materialistic gift.
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right, it is definitely a day for both parts of the couple. However, because this blog is generally directed towards women, and because women are usually the part of the couple that put more emphasis on or openly express their love for Valentine's Day, I wanted to share some gift ideas that are not too materialistic for their male counterpart. When it comes to gifts in general, men tend to look for help! Hope this clears it all up. xo
