Hottie Dan is back at it again. After several pleas for our favorite resident Frosting guy to give us something other guys could read and relate to, too, Dan's decided to break down why the big love for Fantasy sports, a question I've been long wondering myself. Ladies, this piece won't help you tear your man away from checking his stats, but at least it will clue you in on why he's in it, and what's in it for him.
The truth of the matter is, every guy was the best athlete from his high school, but decided upon entering college to concentrate on his studies, or he had a career-ending high school knee injury. Yes, we mean it. We all know we could have gone pro in just about anything, but we had to "grow up." So what do we do now? Forget about sports and start taking part in Book Club? Uhhh.. no. We join our local bar league softball tournament, where we can showcase our physical dominance, we play basketball at the local YMCA and act like we just won a gold medal, after we win a Sunday morning game. Our real dominance, however, is not shown in either of those places, but online, where ultimate bragging rights for knowledge of sports (directly related to athletic prowess) is claimed. Girls, however, get the greatest gift of all: Listening to us talk about our "teams" and hearing our temper tantrums resulting from injuries and poor performances by professional athletes. This begs the question: "WTF? What are Fantasy sports? Are there dragons and princesses? Why is it so much fun? How does it work? And why... does it even matter?"
Fantasy sports are simple. They don't require huge explanation. Usually, a group of ten to twelve people join a league on a site like Yahoo or ESPN. An order is set randomly for who get to pick first out of all the players in the league (yes, the real professional leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and even Nascar, golf, and who knows what else). Each guy drafts a team of players (my team could have Tom Brady and Chad Ochocinco, even though they don't play together in the NFL). Each week, each player's stats are tallied up, ranging from the touchdowns to yards accumulated (that's why your boyfriend goes insane when a random player scores two touchdowns). At the end of the week, either your or your opponent's team has accumulated better overall statistics, and he is declared the winner. At the end of the year, an ultimate winner is crowned to receive bragging rights over his friends for being the Fantasy coach.
So, why is this so much fun? We feel in control of an actual team, which most of us would never have the opportunity to in real life. And it makes watching the games that much more exciting, because you aren't only rooting for your favorite team, but now you can root for "your Fantasy team" as well. So next time you hear whoever it may be talking about his Fantasy team, you can at least have an idea of WTF he is talking about. We can't all be famous, but please, let us think it!
yawn. where are the fashion/relationship posts i've come to love?!
