Curly Q-ute.

I am a quintessential curly girl. I have made Curly Girl: The Handbook by Lorraine Massey my personal bible. I'm not talking wavy hair, or loose curls. I have the kind of hair that shall not be tamed without an army of shampoos, conditioners, curly cremes and hair gel. But I don't have the time or energy to do it every day.

Curly hair like mine is nearly impossible to accessorize. Preppy headbands emphasize my poof; adorable barrettes cannot maintain their hold. Classic bobby pins have a four-hour lifespan in my hair. So what is a girl to do? I cannot pull my hair back in a classic ballet bun, and ponytails make me look like a twelve-year old. So, when the days come along that I just simply do not have the time for the full-blown attack on my hair, I have one option - the sloppy bun: piled messily on the top of my head, usually with a few stubborn curls that refuse to stay in. But I can't stand for boring. Despite having the classic taste of a jeans-and-tshirt-girl, I need this sloppiness to not look, well, sloppy. Classic headbands hurt my skull, but elastic headbands are nothing short of a godsend. They pull back the frizzy tendrils at the front of my hair and add just the right amount of decoration.

Being trapped in suburban Connecticut, I made the journey up I-95 to Laila Rowe in New Haven. Much to my delight, Laila Rowe priced all their new spring items 25% off. Headbands included. I picked up a lace-style headband and hippie-style headband, perfect for dressing up, or the every day.

To all my fellow (lucky!) curly girls, embrace the headband and sloppy bun. It's quick, it's easy, and (not gonna lie), it's adorable. If you're in Connecticut, and want to check out Laila Rowe, there are locations on Broadway in New Haven and in the Danbury Mall. There are plenty of locations throughout New York City, and for you mid-atlantic girls, locations in Maryland and Virginia. Or, make life easy and shop online with Laila Rowe.
