Now that the holidays are past us and all our money has been spent on stuffing stockings, stocking up bottles of champagne, and indulging in favorite personal activities, we are officially broke, and many of us, tired of our monotonous wardrobes. How do we manage to keep our outfits looking fresh with the same old pair of jeans and shirts that clog up our dresser drawers?
Simple.
Pick a few basic pieces that you find yourself wearing every day. My favorites? Charcoal gray t-shirts, bejeweled jeans and a black tailored blazer. Dress your regulars up with accessories, like thick belts, long necklaces and sparkly pins. These accessories help give the illusion that today's outfit is unlike yesterday's.
I own a bunch of dresses: They're all short and spaghetti-strapped, and let's face it, they're taking up space in my closet this time of year. Style tip: Turn your rack of dresses into a top shop. I like tucking a sparkling mini-dress into jeans and scrunching it out at the waist. Once I throw my blazer on, it's like I've created a brand new top. If you own an entire store's worth of dresses, consider yourself fully stocked.
If you're into looking like you just rolled out of bed (no sarcasm here, it can be chic on occasion), pair a long flannel with some black tights and heels. Don't own a flannel? Dad probably does.
Styletip(s): Keep your overly bright colors to a minimum. Steer clear of mixing your neon hot shorts with a bright colored sweater. Nude, black, gray, white and (sometimes) navy can be worn with a variety of different color apparel. Keep your prints separate. A flannel top, under no circumstances, complements a diamond-embellished jean skirt. For every glam piece you wear, counterbalance it with a neutral color, even if that happens to be with the help of your ancient Hanes t-shirt.
Mixing and matching can be fun and eye-opening.
Don't be afraid to try outfits that you'd usually never think twice of.
