I really don't think they come lazier and more inept than me when it comes to picking up a shovel, a drill, a hammer or anything of the sort. Three feet of snow? I sat and watched out the window as my brother shoveled away. Picture needed to be hung? I assembled a small pile of nails and handed my dad the hammer. Lazy? Sure. But completely spaced when it comes to doing handy work, is more like it. It got me thinking: I couldn't possibly be the only girl around without a clue. Feeling like a tool myself, I pressured my dad to teach me how to change a tire, something I'd always wanted to do (probably more so to just be able to say I knew how) but never actually learned. When I discovered that changing a tire was really no great shakes, I pushed for more. Why shouldn't I know how to use all the equipment my guy friends can handle with such ease?
I'm no pro with any tools in particular yet, but a few big boys that really impress me are the Cordless Drill Driver (what's that? check it out and grab your own right here courtesy of Tinbox Tools), the Corded Hammer Drill and the Corded Jigsaw. Okay, maybe I'm jumping a little ahead of myself here (I don't even know how to properly use a hammer), but something about learning how to use these power tools are seriously empowering in itself.
Girls, it's not about learning to use the most impressive equipment, but it is, after all, really important to know how to use a few key tools to perform basic tasks, you feel me? At the end of the day, I like knowing that if I'm stuck on the side of the road with a flat, I don't have to rely on a passerby to help me out. If I want to hang a picture on my wall, I know how to do it. And if I need to put together a shotty piece of Ikea furniture, I could do that, too.
AMEN!
