The Boyfriend Package.

Not to toot my own horn, but as a girlfriend, I'm a really good spoiler. I love giving my boyfriend things, especially when he least expects it. Certainly, it's important to acknowledge your man on his birthday, on your anniversary, and on Christmas, but it's even more important to acknowledge the fact that he puts up with you each and every day.

And while I can't vouch for you, I can tell you that I'm one tough cookie. So my guy definitely deserves little goodies now and again. A little pat on the back, a big fat thank you, a token of your appreciation - whatever the gift, you're showing that you're willing to go above and beyond. You're thanking him, but you're also setting an example for the kind of relationship you're after.

*Sigh* Did you really think I didn't have an ulterior motive for pampering my guy with extras? Some of my favorite thank you gifts exclude boxers, cologne, watches and special sex. Those gifts should be reserved for marked holidays and occasions. Heartfelt, spontaneous gifts that cater to his interests, in-the-moment needs, and even funny conversations between the two of you, are perfect anytime prezzies.

My favorite go-to gifts include laminated homemade coupons: One un-interupted boys' night, one 1-hour massage. Get the idea? Whatever it is your boyfriend is into, but either doesn't usually have the privacy or time to do. Sporting event tickets, a surprise thirty-rack of his favorite college beer, a steak dinner on your dime, or an eye roll-free video game session, instead of your usual Tuesday night chick flick.

  1. My boyfriend makes a significant amount more than I do and already has everything he wants, and has really simple tastes. But he keeps every heartfelt card I ever gave him, and that's all he wants. :)
