She sat at the end of the bar and played with a strand of hair in front of her face. Nate was a little late, but she had been there five minutes early. Nervous habit. She ordered a glass of wine and pushed a few buttons on her cell phone, so the group of birthday girls sitting next to her wouldn't think she was there for a lonely afterwork cocktail. She'd have never. A friend from high school came up beside her and put his hand on her shoulder. "Fancy running into you here," he said, with a big, floppy smile. She grinned. Small town living. But really, it was terrible.
It got her thinking: Nate knew Jake. Was she wrong to have agreed to meet him for drinks? She fluffed off the thought, and sipped her Pinot Grigio. So long as she was stuck in Small Town USA, she hadn't a choice. Was she really supposed to turn her nose at every person who knew Jake? Doing so would have eliminated three-quarters of the local population.
Nate arrived, and she squealed. He was even more beautiful in person than she'd remembered. They chatted for hours, with an ease that she didn't find with many other men. She'd learned that he was adventurous, hard-working, family-oriented and athletic, and then agreed to a second glass of wine. He noted her pearls, before he drove her to her car, one-hundred feet away.
He placed the sweetest kiss she'd had in months on her lips before he dashed off.
