what's a good amount of time to make a guy that you like wait for the hook up?

The rule that I've recently implemented (and let me tell you, it works wonders) is "The Dating Game." The only thing I'll ever let a guy do, is give me a kiss. If he wants more, then he must ask me on a date. Each date, I let him get away with more. Generally, you shouldn't lay all your cards out much before the fourth date.
